What causes Gynecomastia?

Men who have an imbalance in their sex hormones may suffer from gynecomastia. Sex hormones are responsible for the development of sexual characteristics in women and men.

Testosterone is the main male sex hormone that causes a man to develop muscle mass and body hair. Estrogen is the primary female sex hormone that controls the development of female traits, such as breasts.

Men produce both hormones, but usually larger amounts of testosterone and only small amounts of estrogen. If you produce more estrogen than normal or your testosterone-estrogen hormones are out of balance, you may develop excess breast tissue.

As men age, they become more likely to develop gynecomastia as their levels of testosterone naturally decline.

What is gynecomastia chest reduction surgery?

Men sometimes experience enlarged breasts due to hormones, certain medications, or aging. “Man boobs” whittle away confidence and self-esteem. While the condition isn’t dangerous, it can sometimes cause discomfort.

Dr. Miller-Thrasher performs gynecomastia chest reduction surgery using liposuction. During the procedure, you’re placed under local or general anesthesia and she makes a small incision on each side of your chest. Small cannulas, or tubes, are placed in the incisions and a vacuum device sucks away excess fat.

Dr. Miller-Thrasher may also use VASER® ultrasound laser suction technology as an alternative to traditional lipo.

What is VASER ultrasonic liposuction for gynecomastia?

Innovative Women’s HealthCare Solutions prefers using VASER ultrasonic liposuction for gynecomastia cases. Before suctioning the fat, VASER technology breaks it up with soundwaves so it’s easier to remove from your body.

VASER ultrasonic liposuction also allows Dr. Miller-Thrasher to effectively sculpt and contour your chest.

What are the benefits of VASER ultrasound liposuction?

Because the fat associated with gynecomastia tends to be more fibrous, it can be hard to remove with traditional liposuction techniques. VASER ultrasound technology effectively breaks it down so it can easily be removed.

As compared to traditional lipo, VASER procedures typically result in:

  • Less pain
  • Smaller incisions
  • Better long-term results

A VASER procedure also tends to be simpler for the surgeon to complete, reducing your risk of complications.

What is recovery like following chest reduction?

You’ll notice an immediate improvement in the appearance of your chest following the gynecomastia procedure. Although pain is minimal afterward, with just a few days of soreness, vigorous exercise is off-limits for at least three weeks.
